The Albuquerque Chapter of ASM International is one of the best chapters in the country with respect to programming and participation at local monthly meetings. We bring in some of the best speakers in the country and often hold joint meetings with other technical societies, which fulfills ASM's charter to provide relevant technical information and social/networking opportunities for people interested in materials technology.
The success of the Albuquerque Chapter is due to its membership and to a group of volunteers who have been very active. As the saying goes, "quality breeds quality." Because of their efforts, more members are getting involved with chapter operations. We have made great progress. However, the only way to make our chapter better is if more members become actively involved. This means serving as a chapter officer or on a chapter committee. If you have an interest in getting involved, we will find a place for you that is interesting and rewarding. For example, we have several committees that could always use more members, these include: the Membership Committee, the Awards/Scholarship Committee, the Program Committee, the Educational Outreach Committee, the Long-Range Planning Committee, and the Rio Grande Regional Symposium Committee.
Participation in leadership of the chapter only requires attending quarterly Executive Committee meetings and contributing 1-2 hours per month between meetings. Our Executive Committee meetings are informal, enjoyable social events. Call or e-mail me for details and I'll provide information on the roles of each committee and officers. I am hoping that some that have served this chapter in the past are willing to participate on the committees to ensure the future success of our chapter.
There is no substitute for active involvement in your local ASM chapter. I have found it a wonderful experience and an outstanding opportunity to network with other materials-related scientists and engineers in the area. I can guarantee that your participation will be technically and personally rewarding. To support your profession, please consider actively participating in the chapter activities this year.
